It's a midtempo metal song, but I don't want to reveal too much just now as the song is yet to be mixed and the songwriter may add some orchestration to the track.
Gergely and I went to Foyer Music's studio last week to do the recording. I received the music and the lyrics beforehand and wrote the vocal melodies. This is the first song I wrote all the vocals for on my own but I must tell that Gergely helped me a lot with suggestions about which part of the song needs some extra harmonies and how to create melodies that fit the lyrics.
I really enjoyed working in the studio. Though I wrote most of the melodies at home before the recording session, we added more backing vocals after listening to the main vocals that we felt would have suited the song. I love the process of putting a song together. I'm really happy with the result of the vocal recording, and I'll show you the song as soon as possible. Stay tuned. :)

The HbNation

Collaboration, macbook

Hi all,

Nora was invited to be a part of an on-line collaboration in which she recorded vocals for a song. But for a reason. Lots of things happened here; we have finished the recording of the album and started the rehearsals, to learn to actually play the songs. In the meantime Arpad left the band and his place has been taken by Alan Leonard. Saku Hiltunen (the guy who did the guitars for us on the album - if you remember) has applied for a permanent guitarist's position which we were more than happy to offer him. Lee Thomas jumped in for the other guitar and behind the keys, there is Mark Chalmers. We are in Norfolk at the moment, at Leeders Farm. This is an amazing place, far beyond our expectations. You can find couple of pictures of the studio, house and drum recording...

After traveling more than 10 hours on trains, we arrived on Friday (Gergely and RP) to Wymondham. ON the very next day (after fixing some issues with the drumkit - the courier smashed one kickdrum and broke two hoops and cracked the shell) we started to record - big thanks to the Leedersfarm staff for the spare hoop and for getting the local instrument store open on Saturday for me... So new hoops, a new lug and a new head, setting the kit up, miking the kit up... The sound was bang on as it was, the only litte thing was that we were unsatisfied with the snare sound. After some listening and swapping heads we ended up using a Starclassic steel snare and a large membrane mic on the wires instead of the 56. That was 11pm.

On the next day the drum session started, with some of the technical-tight songs... Very proudly and greatly, 5 has been done that day, leaving two absolutely painful tracks for us. The plan was to record those tracks on the next day so we are a day ahead...

This just has not happened. We recorded, however, one song, and decided to rewrite the other one.

This is the third day, today, G broke the kit down and set up an other one; one of the songs has a nice lovely samba in it - for this he made a nice jazzy set with a different miking pattern. This has been recorded too. Drum editing started, Owen, the soundman is pulling the takes to the gridlines at the very moment whilst we supply him with endless cups of coffee, some bolognese and other nice stuff to keep him going.

You find some pics in the albums section so go and check them.

UPDATE - Very early here, 2am. We finished with the editing of our hardest song, we need to get some nice snare samples, maybe a Black Beauty or a Tama Masai... but that's for tomorrow, now off.

UPDATE - Next morning, I'm G now, sitting at the mac with a cup of hot coffee in front of the iMac. Life is sweet, I had a great sleep, woke up just now.. today we'll be looking for the guitar sound, having some gear to get it from. Also, resampling some snares, (in one song we used a very old Ludwig bone piccolo, sounded amazing, but in the particular mix it turned out to be very dry. So nothing left, we have to resample it... either with the Starclassic or the Black Beauty. I am particularly unhappy about it cuz it means that I loose all the fills and flams, but I am not really sure if we could make them audible in the busy mix so might loose them anyway...)

The low note sounds better

Hi folks,

we just started to record the bass tracks this weekend. Two songs are already finished and we hope it all will be done until Wednesday. One of the eight songs will be recorded in Wymondham, with the new acoustic bass instead of my beloved BTB. Well, this recording is an important milestone for me in searching for my own sound. This is a very important thing for bass players (basically we don't use a lot of sounds and effects like a guitarist or a keyboard player) and I was desperately looking for mine in vain... for more than four damn years! It started with a decision: get real instruments instead of the low - cost shit what I used until my first year in HeavenBlade. I needed a catchy, massive metal sound and the very popular Ibanez seemed a good choice. The first one, a 4 -string X Series, (a Japanese model) was my main weapon from the summer of 2007. I used it on our demo called "Rising" in 2008. It's sound was so much more better but wasn't good enough. It was too rich in highs and with four strings I just felt myself behind bars. So in the autumn of 2008 I bought a BTB-405 model from Ibanez. This one is a real monster! Especially it's lows are frenetic, and with a parametric EQ it's possible to do some WAH-like effects by using the guitar only! When we re-recorded the bass tracks of "Rising" in 2009 I played the BTB and it made a huge difference. The old version sounded like some punk-metal mixture and teh new record sounds like a powerful modern metal stuff. However, a good instrument is not enough. My sound was very dry, crunchy and sometimes extremely noisy, even if I played very gently. It was because my strings weren't good for my playing style. I used to play with D'Addario strings. These are very good for most of the metal bassists who are playing with picks. I play with fingers and trying to generate a sound that's warmer than the typical metal sounds. A couple of weeks before I was reading Bill Milkowski's book about Jaco Pastorius. I really love Jaco's sound so I decided to try the strings he used. I ordered Rotosund strings for this recording and when I started to play with them, Oromon and me just looked at each other. My sound became really warm and rich in middles. This way I will be able to serve a really massive bass to The Melody Of Oblivion. We are very glad with this and I'm so happy. Things like this are very important in a musician's life. Find your own sound just feels like find your true love or something else like that... blah. I'm still working with my sound, but now it's so much better.

Practice makes perfect :)

Hi everyone,

We don't have too many news just now but I want to keep you informed.
First of all, we practice, practice and practice.
Though in the last few days I had a cold so I wasn't singing that much. The meeting was organised at 10am at Budapest, in a small and messy project-studio, a great sounding workplace of a busy man, and by the saying (messyer the table the more efficient the man is) he is really efficient. Getting there was a bit difficult cuz I'd a bad and short night beforehand with only 4 hours of sleep and, the bu was so late in the morning. So I just could manage to get there in time. We started working at 11am, laying the foundations for the songs... preparation, preparation, preparation.

So we hooked up a Casio piano, a Korg Triton Studio LE to a compressor and a alto valve mic preamp... surprise, but the Alto sounds good - well, not sure HOW good exactly, but there's no noise at all, we had a great massive signal, and a mild, warm character. There is a possibility that I'll need to play these tracks through some stuff at Wymondham...

The first song we done is not the first on the album. It has a very dark, lonesome atmosphere, a srange mixture of loneliness, fear, and dry, dead darknes. Kinda like if you would have a claustrophobic panic attack in a very huge, empty, dead-out station. We spant many hours with the intro, finding jus the right sounds, keeping it dark but also wery dry and empty; most of the good pads are badly full with effects and arpeggios; that's a thing what we did not want to put in here - but we were looking for the spacey atmospehere created by them. I think what we've done is almos perfect... I'll need some time to listen them through before saying 'ready.'., but I am so happy with the result.

Second... wow, that was quick. Must tell You, there is no such a sampler outside what can overhelm a real cello player, but for now, I'm OK with a string-quartet imitation; the celo shall be live anyway... OR ewql... let's see which one will be easier. I have to write a solo over the part called "technical shit'... I plan to do it today. In fact, now. So bye for now....

1,

The keyboards #1.

First things first. Sor some strange reason Daniel's disappeared on the very day of strting the work... We were waiting for him for several hours, trying to call him, but there was no answer at all - nor for the mails... So he's dissapeared to the Hyperspace. That's a bog kick in our arse, since we had the time with him to do all the preparation and producing what's necesary for a recordnig... Now we do' really have this luxury. However, we found a man, Krisztian Kun, who has great experience and passion in music, keys and sound engineering. I will meet him tomorrow morning, starting some sort of work... but, since we don't have time at all, he will not be able to play everything through his instruments - most of the stuff will be recorded from the MIDI data... by this, I'll loose the graceful comfort of the real hands' touch; i must compose every single note into the music... The solos and important parts shall be played by hand, but most of the keyboards will be recorded by synth, or EWQL Ra, with such things like them...

So excited again, hopfully not in vain.

Zero

This is the day before I stat recording the keyboards. We decided to go on by a strange and unusual plan, mostly based on the locations of the individual musicians we are working with. So, the keyboards come first, during the Christmas-Holiday of Nora and Myself; in Hungary. The man who's been asked to play with us is Daniel Szebenyi, big thank for him. You can hear his power-metal side on our demo but, this time we shall put more darkness into the music. It will be fairly difficult to record, since most of the notes are tight and thick but also, there is a constant 'nighmare-ambience' in the air, mostly provided by the keyboard. So this time the timing is very important, it is not enough just to play on click... i think now the perfection lays on the unperfection; sounds strange isn't it? Well, it is very difficult to make.

By the planning we need 3 days to do the job, with the possibility to take more; the job will be done at Daniel's house-studio.

We will start tomorrow, so my head is a bit full of the preparation, the mood, all the things what I brought up through composing this music. I left a lot of space for the keys and for new ideas so t will be a very creative process, that's for sure.

Studio

After some sort of chaotic and funny jokes, the UK side of the band just simply left.
